How much fat can be removed? | John Hatherley

It depends on the area treated and the size of the patient. In general, about 5 liters of fluid/fat can be removed at a time. If the patient is bigger and requires more the procedure can be done in stages over the course of several months.

How long does it take to see the results? | John Hatherley

The results are immediate depending upon the amount of fat removed and area treated. Patients will continue to improve as the swelling subsides and the skin retracts.
This whole process can take from 4-6 months but the majority of the healing occurs in the first 8 weeks.

Can the fat return after liposuction? | John Hatherley

The fat that is removed is gone. However, if the patient doesn’t pay attention to their diet and exercise they can gain weight. The area that was treated will not be as big as the areas that were not treated.

How does laser lipolysis differ from traditional liposuction? | John Hatherley

With traditional liposuction, the patient is put to sleep under general anesthesia. While under general anesthesia the surgeon can use a larger cannula and remove more fat than can usually be done using the laser. The downside of traditional liposuction is the risk of general anesthesia and excessive bleeding due to the amount of fat removed.
Laser liposuction is performed with a smaller cannula while the patient is awake. The patient is infused with a solution of saline and lidocaine, a local anesthetic in the area the fat is going to be removed.
There is no risk of general anesthesia using laser liposuction and the bleeding is minimal. In fact, most patients can return to work in a day. The laser also heats the skin and promotes collagen production which aids in skin tightening.
